Not all dental work can wait until a scheduled appointment time. If you experience a dental emergency, you will need to know how to receive immediate treatment.
It can be challenging to determine which dental problems constitute an emergency and which can wait for standard office hours. This article will explain when you should seek emergency treatment and when you can call for a prompt office-hours appointment.
Examples of Dental Emergencies
Following are several examples of situations where you need dental care as soon as possible:
Knocked-Out Tooth
Time is of the essence if you or your child knocks out a tooth. The sooner we can replace the tooth in its socket, the more likely it will bond with the jaw.
If you have a knocked-out tooth, follow our instructions to preserve it until we can attempt to reseat it.
Broken Tooth
A broken tooth is a dental emergency. We may be able to save the tooth with a root canal and crown. However, if the tooth breaks below the gum line, we must extract it and plan a tooth restoration like a bridge or implant.
Severe Toothache
If you have a severe toothache preventing you from sleeping, eating, or relaxing, call our office. You may be experiencing a dental abscess or need a root canal.
Non-Emergency Situations Requiring Prompt Care
While many dental problems are urgent, not all are true emergencies. These dental issues can generally wait for an office-hours appointment, though we will strive to get you in the office promptly.
Crown or Bridge Falling Out
If a crown or bridge falls out, save it and call our office for a prompt appointment. You may want to set the crown back in place temporarily using dental adhesive, toothpaste, or sugar-free gum. Call our office for advice.
Chipped Tooth
While a broken tooth is an emergency, a chipped tooth can generally wait for office hours. If you chip a front tooth, you will be anxious to get it repaired because it can interfere with your appearance. We will fit you in during office hours at your earliest convenience.
Dull Toothache
Call our office for a regular appointment if you have a dull toothache that does not interfere with your daily activities. Our staff can help you determine whether your toothache causes concern.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If you have experienced oral trauma, a head injury, or uncontrolled bleeding, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Dental care can wait until you address your medical needs.
